Understanding Bunionettes (Tailor's Bunion)

Bunionettes, also known as Tailor's Bunions, are a less common but equally painful cousin to the traditional bunion. They occur on the outside of the foot at the base of the little toe or pinky toe, causing discomfort and sometimes making it difficult to wear shoes. In this blog post, we'll explore what causes bunionettes, their symptoms, and the various treatment options available.

What is a Bunionette?

A bunionette forms when the fifth metatarsal bone (pinky toe) enlarges or shifts outward, creating a bony bump on the outer edge of the foot. This condition is named "Tailor's Bunion" because it was commonly seen in clothing tailors who sat cross-legged for long periods, putting pressure on the outside of their feet.

Causes of Bunionettes

Several factors can contribute to the development of a bunionette, including:

  1. Genetics: A hereditary predisposition to foot abnormalities can increase the likelihood of developing bunionettes.
  2. Foot Structure: Certain foot shapes and structures, such as having a wider and flatter foot or a prominent fifth metatarsal, can predispose individuals to bunionettes.
  3. Improper Footwear: Wearing tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes that place excessive pressure on the outside of the foot can contribute to the formation of bunionettes.
  4. Activities: Repeated pressure on the outer edge of the foot from activities like running, dancing, or prolonged sitting in certain positions can intensify the condition.

Symptoms of Bunionettes

The symptoms of a bunionette can vary in severity but often include:

  • A visible bump on the outside of the foot at the base of the little toe
  • Pain and tenderness around the affected area, especially when wearing tight shoes
  • Redness and inflammation around the bump
  • Swelling in the surrounding tissues
  • Calluses or corns over the bunionette due to friction with shoes

Treatment Options for Bunionettes

Treatment for bunionettes can range from conservative measures to surgical intervention, depending on the severity of the condition and the level of discomfort experienced. Here are some common treatment options:

  1. Conservative Treatments:
    • Footwear Modifications: Switching to shoes with a wider toe box and avoiding high heels can reduce pressure on the bunionette.
    • Padding and Orthotics: Using protective pads or custom orthotic inserts can help alleviate pain and redistribute pressure away from the bunionette.
    • Ice and Medication: Applying ice packs and taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can help reduce pain and swelling.
    • Physical Therapy: Stretching and strengthening exercises may improve foot mechanics and relieve symptoms.
  2. Surgical Options:
    • If conservative treatments fail to provide relief, surgery may be considered. Surgical procedures for bunionettes typically involve removing the bony prominence, realigning the bones, or correcting structural deformities.
    • Minimally Invasive Surgery: Advances in surgical techniques allow for minimally invasive procedures with smaller incisions, reduced recovery times, and less post-operative pain.

Bunionettes, while less common than traditional bunions, can cause significant discomfort and interfere with daily activities. Understanding the causes, recognizing the symptoms, and exploring the various treatment options can help manage this condition effectively. If you are experiencing persistent pain or difficulty due to a bunionette, consulting with an orthopaedic physician can provide personalized care and the best course of action for your foot health. At The Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Center, we are dedicated to helping you find relief and get back on your feet comfortably. Call or schedule your appointment online today.
