The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics is redefining the way musculoskeletal care is delivered across the region with locations throughout Maryland, DC, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
My ankle journey began back in December of 1999, when I rolled my left ankle walking down a set of steps and heard a loud “pop.” After a trip to the ER, I was told to rest and follow up at home. My primary care doctor believed it was only a severe sprain and sent me to physical therapy. Unfortunately, what we didn’t know at the time was that I had actually hyperextended my peroneal tendon and needed immediate surgery. That procedure didn’t happen until 2002, but it worked well and gave me many years of stability.
By 2019, the pain and movement issues returned. Imaging showed that my ankle needed a rebuild. I underwent tendon and ligament debridement with microfractures, which helped at first, but my surgeon made it clear that my cartilage damage meant I would eventually need to choose between ankle fusion or replacement.
In 2021, another minor surgery was done to relieve discomfort, but it was only a temporary solution. I knew a bigger decision was coming.
After thorough research and conversations with other patients, I chose fusion and underwent surgery on January 29, 2024. While the procedure itself went smoothly, it became clear during recovery that something wasn’t right. Pain lingered, and healing slowed. A CT scan eventually confirmed that the fusion had failed and I had been walking on a fractured ankle for months.
In December 2024, I had another procedure to remove the failed hardware and install a plate for stabilization. This step brought relief and set the stage for the next option: mechanical replacement.
On April 14, 2025, I underwent total ankle replacement surgery. Now, just a few months later, I’m finally beginning to walk more comfortably, bear weight on my left side, and feel some normalcy return. There is still recovery ahead, but I don’t regret any of the decisions I’ve made along the way.
Through this long journey, one thing has remained constant: the incredible care I’ve received at The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics Foot & Ankle Center. From my surgeons to the staff, every step of the way I’ve been supported, guided, and cared for with professionalism and compassion. Their expertise has made an overwhelming process manageable, and I would highly recommend their services to anyone facing similar challenges.
This has been a long road, but I am hopeful for the future and I am truly grateful for the team that helped me get here.
