Essential Foot Care for Diabetics During National Diabetes Month

November is National Diabetes Month, and it’s a great time to raise awareness about the essential role foot care plays in managing diabetes. For individuals living with diabetes, vigilant foot care is critical. With high blood sugar, even minor injuries can quickly escalate to serious complications due to reduced blood flow, slower healing, and a higher risk of infection.

Why Are Feet Vulnerable in Diabetes?

Diabetes can lead to neuropathy, which reduces sensation in the feet, making it easy to overlook small injuries like blisters or cuts. Additionally, decreased blood flow can slow the healing process, increasing the risk of infection. In severe cases, untreated foot issues can lead to ulcers, infections, or even amputation.

Daily Foot Care Tips for Diabetic Patients

Caring for your feet daily is essential in preventing injuries and complications. Here are some key tips:

  • Inspect Your Feet Daily: Check for blisters, cuts, scratches, redness, warmth, swelling, and any unusual bruising or pressure spots. Using a mirror or asking for help can ensure you don’t miss any hard-to-see areas.
  • Wash and Dry Your Feet Carefully: Clean your feet daily with mild soap and warm water. Test the water temperature with your hand first, as diabetic neuropathy can make it hard to feel if water is too hot. Pat dry each foot, especially between the toes.
  • Moisturize Daily: Use a high-quality lotion to keep your skin soft and hydrated but avoid applying lotion between the toes, as this can increase moisture and lead to fungal infections.
  • Keep Nails Trimmed: Trim your toenails straight across and avoid cutting corners to prevent ingrown toenails. If you spot an ingrown toenail, it’s best to let a doctor handle it.
  • Avoid Crossed Legs and Smoking: Sitting cross-legged or smoking decreases blood flow to the feet, heightening the risk of complications.

Selecting the Right Shoes and Socks

Wearing the right footwear and socks is another crucial aspect of foot care:

  • Choose Shoes Carefully: Purchase shoes in the late afternoon when your feet are largest, and avoid shoes that need a “breaking-in” period. A properly fitted shoe reduces the risk of blisters and pressure points.
  • Avoid Going Barefoot: Even at home, avoid walking barefoot, and skip sandals or flip-flops, which can expose your feet to injuries.
  • Opt for Clean, Dry Socks: Wear socks that keep your feet dry and avoid tight socks that could restrict circulation. In cold weather, choose warm socks and ensure your shoes are well-suited to handle the cold.

When to See a Doctor

Diabetes heightens the risk of infection, so it’s essential to seek professional medical attention for any foot injury, no matter how minor. Here at The Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Center, our experienced podiatrists and orthopedic surgeons are ready to provide comprehensive care for diabetic foot concerns. Whether it’s a minor injury or a serious wound, timely intervention is key to preventing complications.

If you have diabetes, remember that even a small injury can become a major emergency. Practicing daily foot care, wearing proper footwear, and seeking medical advice early are critical steps in managing diabetic foot health.

Protect your feet—today and every day—and give them the care they deserve.
