April is Foot Health Awareness Month, so it’s the perfect time to check in on something we all rely on every day but rarely think about: our feet! Did you know that each foot contains 26 bones? Our feet are incredibly complex and essential to everyday movement, yet they are often overlooked. Neglecting foot health can allow minor issues to develop into conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, and hammertoes. Because we see these conditions so frequently, we know how important prevention and early intervention can be.
Your feet are the foundation of your body. When something is off, it can impact your knees, hips, and even your back over time. In fact, about 20% of Americans experience foot problems each year—making preventative care more important than ever.
Here are some simple tips to help you take better care of your feet:
1. Schedule Regular Check-Ups Visiting our foot and ankle specialists regularly allows us to catch small concerns before they become bigger problems. We recommend annual check-ups to help ensure your feet stay comfortable, functional, and pain-free.
2. Wear Proper Footwear
• Choose shoes that fit well, provide proper support, and are appropriate for your activities.
• Shoes should not pinch, and your toes should have enough room to move comfortably. A good rule of thumb is to leave about a thumb width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
• Replace shoes every 6–12 months, depending on wear.
• Orthotics or inserts can provide extra support if needed—our team can help determine the best option for you.
3. Maintain Good Hygiene
• Wash and thoroughly dry your feet daily.
• Keep your feet dry to prevent excess moisture, which can lead to fungal infections or blisters.
• Change your socks regularly.
4. Stay Active Regular physical activity supports overall health, including your feet. Walking and low-impact exercises help improve circulation and maintain bone strength. Don’t forget to stretch your feet as well!
