A Podiatrist’s Role in Diabetic Care

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, it's important to highlight a significant aspect of diabetes management — foot care. Diabetes can lead to a range of foot conditions, often stemming from two major complications: neuropathy (nerve damage) and poor circulation. At The Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Center, we emphasize the importance of podiatry in preventing and managing these diabetes-related foot issues.

How Diabetes Affects the Feet

1. Diabetic Neuropathy:

Over time, high blood sugar levels can cause nerve damage, leading to a loss of sensation in the feet. This numbness means cuts, sores, or blisters might go unnoticed and untreated, risking severe infections or ulcers.

2. Poor Blood Circulation:

Diabetes often leads to poor blood flow, particularly in the extremities like feet. Reduced circulation can slow down the healing process of any cuts or sores, again increasing the risk of infections or ulcers.

Common Diabetic Foot Conditions

  • Ulcers: Open sores that develop due to skin tissue breaking down and exposing the layers beneath.
  • Charcot Foot: A condition causing weakening of the bones in the foot, leading to fractures and deformities.
  • Infections: Fungal and bacterial infections can become more severe with diabetes.

The Role of Podiatry in Diabetes Care

At The Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Center, our podiatry services play a vital role in diabetes management:

  • Regular Examinations: Routine checks help in early detection of potential problems, preventing complications.
  • Footwear Advice: Proper shoes and custom orthotics can alleviate pressure points and reduce the risk of ulcers.
  • Wound Care Management: Specialized care for any foot wounds to promote healing and prevent complications.
  • Education: Podiatrists should guide patients on how to conduct regular self-examinations and care for their feet.

Tips for Diabetic Foot Care

  • Inspect your feet daily for any cuts, blisters, redness, or swelling.
  • Keep your feet clean and moisturized (avoiding areas between the toes).
  • Wear well-fitting, comfortable shoes and avoid going barefoot.
  • Manage your diabetes effectively through diet, exercise, and medication.

On National Diabetes Awareness Month, let’s remind ourselves of the critical role podiatric care plays in diabetes management. At The Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Center, we're dedicated to providing comprehensive care to help our diabetic patients maintain healthy feet. Remember, your feet are foundational to your overall health, especially in diabetes. For more information or to schedule an appointment with our podiatrists, Dr. Black or Dr. Kim, call us or book online!
