On Bunion Correction

“Dr. Neufeld removed a bunion, hammertoe bone spur 4/2011. He implanted a titanium plate in large toe. Services included x-rays, 3 post-operative shoes, including a pneumonic boot, for each healing stage. I sought out Dr. Steven Neufeld after reading that he has invented various plates to reduce recovery time & improve bunion surgery outcomes. For 30 years I suffered from a painful bunion that was operated on 27 years ago by an incompetent podiatrist. I was lucky this time to have Dr. Neufeld who explained his surgical approach, amt. of pain I would experience, projected outcomes. He prescribed adequate painkillers. His & his staff’s post-operative follow-up were professional & relevant to my needs at each visit. Besides being medically competent, I found Dr. Neufeld & his staff to be compassionate & personable. After 3 months, I consider myself fully recovered from the surgery, pain free, & leading an active life.”

“After suffering from painful and unsightly bunions for more than a decade, I decided it was time to put an end to my pain. I tried every gimmick on the market from toe spacers to bunion slings in an effort to stave off surgery, but to no avail. Once I realized that the only way to end my discomfort for good was to have surgery to remove my bunions, I set about gathering referrals. I spoke with internists, orthopedic surgeons and even a foot and ankle specialist in another state. Each source independently cited Dr. Matthew Buchanan.

I scheduled an appointment to inquire as to the specifics of the surgery that many people had warned me was no less than horrific. Any reservations that I had previously held disappeared upon meeting with Dr. Buchanan. Dr. Buchanan exudes competence and kindness. He was immensely thorough and patient while explaining the details of my procedure and in answering my near endless questions. As a result, I never harbored a moments doubt that my surgical experience would be anything short of perfection.

Surgery day arrived and everything went according to plan. I had heard rumors that Dr. Buchanan was well known for administering some of the best anesthesia blocks and I am happy to report that this rumor is based on fact. I was numb for a very long period of time; however, what scared me most was what to expect after the anesthesia wore off. While some pain was to be expected, the pain was never severe enough to warrant a prescription narcotic. Over the counter level doses of ibuprofen, elevation above heart level, and ice were enough to ease my pain. After about a week, I was fitted with a bunion boot. The boot made it very easy to resume almost all activities, which made the recovery period fly by. During my time in the boot, I experienced virtually no pain. After six weeks, I was freed from the boot and able to wear a wide shoe. At this time, I experienced slight pain as I worked on regaining flexibility; however, the pain diminished each day. By eight weeks, I was virtually back to my normal activity level. Overall, I am still amazed that my recovery went so smoothly. And to think that I put off having the surgery for so long because all I ever heard was that bunion surgery was one of the most painful surgeries one could have. Thank you again for everything. I am no less than thrilled with the results!”
