Matthew M. Buchanan, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in the foot and ankle. Prior to joining the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Center of Washington, DC, Dr. Buchanan practiced in Vail, Colorado. He was a member of Vail-Summit Orthopaedics and served as Chief of Surgery at St. Anthony’s Summit Medical Center. Dr. Buchanan took primary orthopaedic call for the six major ski resorts in Summit and Eagle Counties. In 2007, he left the mountains of Colorado for the DC area to focus his practice exclusively on the care of the foot and ankle.
Exploring all surgical and nonsurgical options with his patients, Dr. Buchanan prides himself on a patient-centered, outcome-driven approach to foot and ankle care. This approach led to his selection by peers as one of Washingtonian’s 2012 Top Doctors.
Dr. Buchanan is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. In this role, he is an active teacher and lecturer to the Georgetown University Orthopaedic Surgery Residents. Dr. Buchanan is on staff at Inova Fairfax and Fair Oaks Hospitals as well as Virginia Hospital Center. He serves as an orthopaedic consultant to the Virginia Hospital Center Wound Healing Center. In addition, he works at Inova Woodburn Surgery Center, Fairfax Surgery Center and Piccard Surgery Center.
Dr. Buchanan is also an orthopaedic foot and ankle consultant to The Washington Ballet and one of the Core Clinical Providers for the dancers. As a Core Clinical Provider, he provides immediate access to medical evaluations and on-call coverage during the dance season.
Dedicated to research, Dr. Buchanan has authored multiple book chapters on foot and ankle topics including Pes Planus (flatfoot), Ankle Arthroscopy (minimally invasive ankle surgery) and Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus (ankle cartilage defects). He is the Primary Investigator on an Inova Institutional Review Board-approved study analyzing the best surgical techniques to treat chronic ankle instability (weak ankles). His research papers have been published in leading medical journals and have evaluated the optimum technique to treat traumatic foot injuries and the effects of smoking on bone fusion. Dr. Buchanan serves
as an editor for two prestigious medical journals: Foot and Ankle International (FAI) and Foot and Ankle Specialist (FAS). Also, he currently serves on the editorial board for www.FootEducation.com, an educational patient website peer-reviewed by orthopaedic surgeons with subspecialty training in foot and ankle surgery.
Dr. Buchanan has expertise in complex problems of the foot and ankle. Current clinical interests include bunions/hammertoes, arthritis/cartilage regeneration and minimizing the recovery time associated with foot and ankle surgery. He specializes in Total Ankle Replacement and is one of a select group of Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeons who has received certification to perform four FDA-approved Total Ankle Replacements. Dr. Buchanan holds a patent on a unique FDA-approved surgical plate designed to speed recovery for moderate to severe bunion deformities.
Dr. Buchanan is frequently invited to lecture at local, regional and national events. He was recently invited to present to medical professionals at the 2014 Inova Youth Sports Safety and Health Expo, lecturing on Foot and Ankle Injury Prevention in Ballet and Cheerleading. Dr. Buchanan was also invited to present at the Washingtonian Magazine Fit Fest in 2014, focusing on the topic Finding the Best Workout Regimen For You. He was Invited Faculty at the 2013 American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Summer Meeting in Hollywood, Florida, moderating a Research Paper Presentation. At the 2012 AOFAS Summer Meeting in San Diego, California he lectured about Ankle Syndesmotic Reduction. Dr. Buchanan was also Invited Faculty at the 2012 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, moderating a session debating Ankle Fusion versus Total Ankle Replacement.
Dr. Buchanan grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and received his Bachelor of Science in Biology at Duke University. He attended medical school at The Ohio State University receiving dual honors in Orthopaedic and General Surgery. He was awarded the Department of Surgery Jonasson Prize for “Exceptional Performance and Dedication to Surgery.” Dr. Buchanan served as Chief Resident at West Virginia University’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery prior to his prestigious fellowship at the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Center in Columbus, Ohio. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
An active sports enthusiast who loves the great outdoors, Dr. Buchanan understands a patient’s desire for a quick recovery. He is an avid bicyclist who organized and completed a 3300-mile self-supported, cross-country bicycle ride in support of Children’s Miracle Network. He successfully completed the 24-Hour of Snowshoe, West Virginia Mountain Bike Race for five years in a row. He is also an accomplished whitewater kayaker and has navigated multiple Class V rivers including the Gauley in West Virginia, Youghiogheny in Maryland and the Pacuare in Costa Rica. He has been an active Crossfit member since 2009.
Dr. Buchanan is married and resides with his wife and two sons in Arlington, Virginia.
