Dr. Steven K. Neufeld is a Board Certified Fellowship-Trained Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in the foot and ankle. He has an academic appointment at Georgetown University and is on the staff at Virginia Hospital Center, Inova Fairfax, Alexandria, & Mt. Vernon Hospitals. In addition, he works at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC and serves as an orthopaedic consultant to the Inova Wound Healing Center.
Aside from his duties at The Orthpaedic Foot and Ankle Center, Dr. Neufeld shares his expertise by being an active teacher and lecturer to both Georgetown University residents and George Washington University residents. He has published numerous papers on various foot and ankle disorders and has received awards for research and lectures at many conferences world-wide.
Dr. Neufeld was a winner of the Roger H. Michael/Johnson & Johnson research award, and is routinely invited to teach trauma and foot and ankle courses locally in Virginia and Washington, DC. He has given lectures both regionally (Medical and Surgical departments at Sibley Memorial Hospital, National Rehabilitation Hospital, Inova Fairfax, Alexandria and Mt. Vernon Hospitals as well as at the Virginia Hospital Center) and nationally (California, Arizona, Colorado, Ohio).
Some exciting recent research projects include: a novel way to address post-operative pain in patients recovering from major foot and ankle reconstruction or trauma; an innovative surgery to heal bones with poor blood supply; the best way to fix an arthritic big toe joint; and using alternative bone to reconstruct a patients damaged foot & ankle.
After receiving an Engineering degree from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Neufeld attended medical school at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia., PA. He then completed a 5-year orthopaedic surgery residency at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and went on to complete a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society where he serves on numerous committees. One of Dr. Neufeld’s unique surgical procedures was recently video-taped for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. This video was not only given to every training program in the country but made available to orthopaedic surgeons world-wide. He is the author of many papers and educational information on the society’s web site (www.aofas.org) and writes educational articles for regional hospital newsletters.
